From the start, the goal was to make hiring easier for schools. They created a universal screening interview—one interview that educators and school professionals could take once, get scored, and share with multiple schools in need of staff.
It solved their biggest problem. Before, a lot of candidates were applying to multiple schools for the same position, and every school was asking them the same questions.

Their team of talent advisors covered interviews across different time zones, but:
School Hire needed a faster way to screen candidates that wasn’t dependent on time zones, availability, or human interviewers.
They evaluated multiple options, but none fully met their needs:
What floored them about HeyMilo was that it felt like talking to a real person.
“The ability to ask follow-up questions and actually rate candidates was huge for us,” James said. “Because if we still had to rate all the interviews ourselves, that would’ve been another big time suck.”
The price per interview was steep. They had been paying $75–$100 per interview. HeyMilo was far less than a fraction of that, and it scaled instantly.
James has worked with a ton of vendors, where onboarding is usually complicated, slow, and full of unnecessary steps.
“With most vendors, onboarding feels overly cumbersome, like there’s a very prescribed process you have to follow, no matter what your actual needs are,” he said.
HeyMilo was the opposite, and everything was quick and flexible. Being an early customer, the only learning curve was figuring out how to customize the AI recruiters, but since then, product updates have made that process way smoother.
And whenever they ran into anything?
“It’s never taken longer than maybe a day and a half to get any issue fixed. And that’s been really refreshing.” James added.
Some school partners were hesitant about AI interviewing. Not just HeyMilo, but an AI interview in general. James didn’t waste time trying to explain it. “I’d just send them the link and say, ‘Try it yourself.’”
He recalled sitting next to a school leader as they tested HeyMilo for the first time. Within two or three minutes, they paused and asked, ‘Is this real?’
James hears this reaction a lot. Many of their partners have remarked how they’ve never experienced anything like it before, and are amazed by how authentic the AI interaction feels.
To be sure, James’ team ran a test, manually scoring interviews themselves and comparing it with HeyMilo’s ratings.
“The ratings are really accurate—very close to what we would do. And our team has 40 or 50 years of combined experience interviewing people.”
“For a first-round screen to see if a candidate meets the bar, I haven’t come across anything better than HeyMilo.”
Originally, they brought in HeyMilo for their school partners and clients. But then?
“We started using it for our own internal hiring. That says a lot.”
They’re even considering deploying AI interviewers regionally, pre-screening teachers before schools even ask for them—so they can bring pre-vetted candidates directly to hiring teams instead of waiting for job postings.
A big reason why HeyMilo worked so well? Customization. Most AI hiring tools force you into pre-set templates and restrictive interview structures. “We really liked that we could dial in the competencies we were looking for, the interview prompts, and even the follow-up instructions.”
This mattered a lot because education hiring is different.
“There aren’t a lot of solid tools that focus on education as an industry. A lot of recruiting in education is really insular. But schools are hiring people all the time, and we saw a big opportunity.”
With HeyMilo, if a school partner wanted to tweak an AI interviewer, their team could do it quickly and easily for them. That just wasn’t something possible with other platforms they’d come across.
James expects their use of HeyMilo to keep growing as more schools and clients come on board.
They’ve even thought about flipping their hiring model. Instead of waiting for schools to request candidates, they might pre-screen candidates first and then bring those ready-to-go educators, administrators, and school support staff directly to schools.
